ME-GY 6703 Linear Control Theory and Design, Spring 2024

Group project

The purpose of the group project is to work collaboratively to formulate an idea, organize it into document, and effectively communicating it to a live audience. All of those skills are necessary in today’s dynamic job market and workforce.

In groups of three, you will identify a disease and a strategy to contain it. You will create a compartmental model with realistic parameters based on a literature search and analyze its evolution over time. Over the course of the semester, you will deliver two products: a concept paper and a presentation.

1. Concept Paper (due on March 13, 2024 at noon)

A concept paper is a one-page pitch that is sent to potential funding agencies to determine whether an idea fits their funding interests. A successful concept paper conveys proposed work concisely and in a compelling manner.

Your concept paper should contain six elements: i) project title, ii) background to explain the importance of the proposed work, iii) specific objectives, iv) expected outcomes, v) intellectual merit, and vi) broader impacts.

The concept paper must be submitted through Brightspace. The paper must not exceed one-page in length, with margins of 1-inch. Text must be typed in a word processor, using single-spaced 12-point Times New Roman font.

2. Presentation (delivered in class on April 24, 2024)

The presentation will reflect the work proposed in your concept paper. While the content is flexible, a presentation should contain: i) background and moti-vation, ii) the model and containment strategy you selected, iii) equations and parameters used in the model, vi) your model’s output, and v) lessons learned. The presentation should be 10 minutes long and all group members must present a portion of it.
