Assignment 2 – Timber brace design, steel brackets and dowelled connections

Scope

A multi-storey timber building is to be built in Tauranga. The lateral load resisting system consist of timber braces with Tectonus Resilient Brace Assemblies (RBA) for ductility (see Figure 1 for concept). The RBA is fastened to a steel bracket that connects it to the timber brace.

As this is still at concept stage, the timber brace can be designed using either Radiata pine glulam (Grade 12) or LVL Grade 13. Two brace configurations are to be investigated.

Required

For the 2 brace configurations, you are to:

1.   Design the brace (size, material, etc … );

2.   Design the dowelled connection between the timber brace and the steel bracket (number of dowels, diameter, spacings, number of shear planes, etc … );

3.   Design the steel bracket that will transfer the force between the RBA and the dowelled connection (number and size of plates, dimensions, welds size and  grades, etc … ).

1.   Make any assumption if information is missing and verify your assumption at the end.

2.   Steel plates 350 MPa yield strength.

3.   Use the Detailed Method to design the dowelled connections.

4.   Submit your EXCEL spreadsheet with the PDF file of your assignment submission.
